GO FKN FAST
GO FKN FAST is a speedy 2D platformer, where the goal is to complete each level as fast as possible. Use power-ups like the Dash Orb to get blistering bursts of speed, or Jump Orbs to help you reach greater heights. Wall jump, dive, dash, and double jump through 45 different levels in the shortest time you can!
GO FKN FAST is my first-ever published video game on Steam. Try GO FKN FAST, and then let me know what you think of it by leaving a review!
My game dev origin story…
I’ve been playing video games my entire life. One of my earliest memories is getting a Nintendo, and Super Mario Bros. 3 for Christmas.
I tried out GameMaker in college to see if game development was something I’d be interested in, but it was a bit too complicated for me at that point in my life.
Fast forward a decade, and I’m headed to PAX East 2024. I attend the con every year, but in 2024, a series of events left me inspired to give game development another try.
As I’m driving over the Summer Street Bridge in Boston, I see an advertisement for Deltarune on the giant TV outside of the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center.
It made me think about how Toby Fox essentially created the very-successful prequel to Deltarune, Undertale, all by himself. I thought “If he could do everything by himself, why can’t I?”
At the time, I was getting familiar with Google Apps Script. I used scripts to optimize workflows I had as an SEO Editor at GAMURS Group. After building a few tools and interfaces, I fell in love with coding.
Also around that time, I was seeing a ton of Pirate Software Shorts on YouTube. Thor’s blueprint to game development, and my new experience with coding encouraged me to try game development again.
I started with the “Dodge the Creeps!” 2D game guide in Godot’s documentation. Completing that made me feel incredible. It was a bit complicated at first, but I made a video game! Shortly after that, I tried the 3D version, and I found that much more fun.
I turned to YouTube to try and find inspiration to make something else, and stumbled upon Heartbeast’s channel. What a legend! He has several follow-along tutorials for different types of video games.
Since I wanted to make my own platformer, I started with Heartbeast’s Pixel Platformer series. It took a few weeks for me to get through it, but by the end of it, I learned how to make a full-fledged 2D platformer!
It was time to create my own game from scratch…
With all of this newfound confidence, I was feeling really ambitious, and decided that my first project would be a 3D FPS platformer/adventure. After a couple months of chipping away at it, I realized that maybe I should start a little slower… and create something familiar/simpler first.
That led me to start developing GO FKN FAST. My plan was simple: I wanted to create a 2D platformer that let the player go fast, and feel cool while doing so. I think I accomplished both of those goals, and I’m proud of what I accomplished with my first released game.
Now that I’ve got a published video game under my belt, I’m hoping to get my foot in the door of the game development industry, and build up experience with different platforms/genres. GO FKN FAST is just the beginning for me!
